SREE POORNATHRAYEESA TEMPLE :
Maha Vishnu is the diety of this temple, which formerly belonged to the Cochin
royal family. It is believed that, Arjuna (one of the Pandavas) established
it. The major festival of this temple is held from November-December. Athachamayam,
another cultural festival, is also celebrated during Onam. It is located at
thripunithura, 10km. from Ernakulam.
CHOTTANIKKARA
TEMPLE :
The temple Diety is Durga Bhagavathy. It is believed that there
is presence of Saraswathy Devi till 7a.m. in the morning. A Bhadra Kali
Devi temple is also present in the premises. The festival here falls in
February-March for nine days. Makam Thozhal is an important day
during this festival. Chottanikkara temple is about 15km. from Ernakulam.
VALLARPADAM
CHURCH :
Situated in an island 3km. west of Ernakulam, church of our lady of Ransom,
Vallarpadam, is a basilica and National Pilgrim Centre. The old church founded
1n 1676 by Portuguese missionaries which was destroyed by heavy flood, and was
reconstructed later with the help of Paliath Raman Valiachan, the Prime Minister
of Maharaja of Cochin. People from all walks of life come to vallarpadam church
for blessings from vallarpadathamma. Mary-mother of Jesus, for this various
needs. Adima and blessing of boats are the two common forms of the prayer at
this church. The newly built gosree bridges make easily access to the church
from Ernakulam.
KUMARAKAM
:
The backwater resort town is situated 16kms. away from Kottayam. House boats
and backwater cruises are the major activities here. Another major attraction
is Kumarakam bird sanctuary which is located on the banks of the Vembanad lake,
is a favourite haunt of many migratory birds. Vembanad lake is an enchanting
picnic spot and a fast developing backwater tourism destination. The serene
lake comes alive during Onam with the spectacular snake boat races. Pathiramanal,
an enfchanting island on the lake, can be accessed by boat from here.
VARAPUZHA
:
A village of rustic charm. Where the backwater never stop kissing the land.
And just 10kms away from the bustling city of Cochin. History seems abound here.
The church built by the Dutch will take you back in time. Also, Varapuzha enjoys
the privileges of a divine place, being adobe of saints-Kuriakose Achen and
Alphonsamma. The temples of Siva and Durga are present here. Besides, the silver
sands of Cherai Beach are just 20kms from here. And now there is a home awaiting
