LALIT KAL AKADEMI GALLERY OF CONTEMPORARY
:
Locate in the Durbar Hall of the Kochi Rajas at D.H. road. It is open between
10 am and 5 pm.
MATTANCHERRY
PALACE :
(Dutch palace) (Open1000 1700hrs.closed on Fridays) Built by the Portuguese
in 1557 and presented to Raja Veera Kerala Varma of Kochi, the palace was renovated
in 1663 by the Dutch. On display here are beautiful murals depicting scenes
from the epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata, and some of the Puranic Hindu legends.
The palace also houses Dutch maps of old Kochi, royal palanquins, coronation
robes of former maharajas of Kochi as well as period furniture.
WILLINGDON
ISLAND :
Named after Lord Willingdon, the then Victory of India, this man-made Island,
created while developing Kochi Port, is accessible by all means of transport.
It is the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command and hosts the Kochi Harbour
Railway Terminus, the Government of India Tourism Office, airport, Customs House,
Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Malabar Hotel, Food Corporation of
India Ltd., and various other important institutions.
MUSEUM
OF KERALA HISTORY :
Located at Edapally on the outskirts of Kochi, on National Highway 47, it has
on view several painting depicting Kerala history and statues of many famous
persons, including Sir.Robert Bristow. The museum is opens between 10am and
4pm on all days except Mondays.
KOCHI
SHIPYARD :
Situated in the southern part of Ernakulam on the way to Willingdon island,
this Shipyard, set up with Japanese collaboration, has a building dock for ships
up to 85,000 DWT and a repair dock that can accommodate ships up to1,00,000
DWT. It is the India. Motilal Nehru, the first oil tanker made in India, was
built here.
MANGALAVANA
BIRD SANCTUARY :
Located in the heart of the city on Dr. Salim Ali Road near the High Court,
this bird sanctuary is a quiet, peaceful forest. Many migratory birds seek sanctuary
here the year round.
